In home brewing, calcium chloride is used to decrease the pH level, especially in lighter beers. Calcium chloride increases the permanent hardness of the water, giving a better mouth feel than gypsum and a naturally existing sweetness. Calcium chloride should be used 1 tsp per 5 gallons of beer in most cases. Useful for adding calcium if the water is low in chlorides.
