Q&A

Cask conditioned beer (also known as "real ale") has a fresh taste, complex flavor, and aromatic profile that makes it unlike any other beer. Whether you're making your very first keg of cask-conditioned beer or your 500th, you'll need special tools to help you along the way, so Beverage Factory has designed these convenient Cask Conditioning Kits with the vital component parts for cask conditioning. Each kit comes with a plastic shive, wooden soft spile, wooden hard spile, and plastic keystone. This is a set of 5 kits.

Cask Beer System Components

The shive bush on your cask is sealed with the plastic shive, which has a small hole in the center that can be used with the soft spile to vent excess CO2 or sealed with the hard spile. The soft spile is inserted into the shive during the venting process, allowing excess CO2 to be released from the cask through the porous wood. Once the conditioning process has ended, it is disposed and replaced with the hard spile to seal the shive and maintain the correct level of carbonation before serving. It is loosened or removed prior to serving, and replaced at the end of the night to maintain levels until the next day. In the case of a lively cask, the hard spile can also be used in the initial venting to prevent a beer shower. The keystone bush on your cask is sealed with the plastic keystone, which has been pre-scored to make it easier to drive a tap into the cask.
