One of our favorite ways to make our beverages better is with infusions. Infusions allow you to really customize your spirits and bring more flavor to your cocktails. For the fall, bourbons and whiskeys are great spirits to infuse with seasonal flavor and spices. Infusions are a great way to customize your spirits to your taste and the are limitless ways to infuse your spirits.
Why Infuse Your Bourbons and Whiskeys?
Here are some good reasons why you should consider infusing your spirits:
- You don't like the taste or the taste of that particular bottle - Maybe you're new to this type of spirit or you just got a new bottle you're not crazy about. Infusing flavors you enjoy into it will make your spirit more enjoyable and easier to mix into a cocktail.
- Upgrade a cheap bottle - If you're on a budget or just want to save some dough, purchasing an inexpensive bottle and infusing it with expensive-tasting flavors will definitely elevate your spirits.
- You want to switch up the flavors in your favorite spirits - While it's nice to have a favorite go-to spirit but maybe you're getting a little bored of it and you want to add a new twist to your favorite classic flavors.
- You want to create a unique cocktail - Using an infused spirit will allow you to include more flavors and complexity to your cocktail without adding more juices, sugar, or more alcohol.

The Equipment
The equipment needed to infuse your bourbon or whiskey is fairly basic. These may be things you can find in your own home or you can easily source. Here are the products we recommend:
- 1 large glass jar or carboy
- Bourbon or Whiskey of your choice
- Fruit, herbs, or spices of your choosing
- Strainer or hop bag

Get to Know Your Bourbon or Whiskey
Before you begin your infusions, you need to understand your spirit and the flavors in your spirit to create a cohesive infusion. Let's discuss the important details about these spirits that you may not know but will ultimately be beneficial when you decide to alter the flavors of your spirit. Bourbon is a type of whiskey made in certain parts of the United States. Whiskeys can come from many countries and each whisky has a different flavor profile. Here's a brief guide on the various types of whiskeys:
Bourbon
Bourbon tends to have a sweeter flavor than other whiskeys. You will typically find notes of vanilla, oak, and caramel. The notes will vary depending on the brand and maker. Bourbons can be categorized as one of four ways: grain forward, nutmeg forward, caramel forward, and cinnamon forward.
Rye Whiskey
This type of whiskey tends to have a grassy and peppery taste with an undeniable and signature spicy finish. This is a grain-forward type of whiskey and sometimes contains notes of oak, smoke, or fruit.
Scotch
Blended Scotch has a smooth malty and buttery flavor with a spicy finish. Single malt Scotch tends to have oaky and woody flavors with signature peaty and smoky notes.
Japanese Whiskey
Japanese whisky typically has fruity and floral notes throughout, with honey, orange peel, and white chocolate flavors. It has a mellow finish with a hint of oak.
Irish Whiskey
Irish whiskey is typically light and fruity with a lightly floral scent and hints of nuts and vanilla. The finish is smooth and mellow, unlike the spicier finish of bourbon or rye whiskey. There is an evident cereal grain note and the aging also imparts that signature whiskey oakiness and caramel.

Autumn is not all about pumpkin spice lattes! Your boozy beverages can use a little fall upgrade with some delicious seasonal flavors.
